What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a common chronic skin disease that leads to redness, flushing and pimple-like spots. It most often affects the face of fair-skinned adults over the age of 30, however many younger patients in their teens and 20s can be effected.

Patients with rosacea often find they have episodes of exacerbation and remission of varying severity. Although it can look similar to acne, it is a different condition.

The main symptoms rosacea are flushing/blushing and pimples mostly affecting the central face. Some people may have an acne/rosacea overlap. Others continue to develop a thickening of their nasal skin, called rhinophyma.

Treatment Options for Rosacea

Effective rosacea management requires a combination of medical and laser therapies, tailored to the individual’s specific symptoms and triggers.

Medical Management

Topical treatments, such as antibiotic creams/gels and antiparasitic creams against demodex mites, help reduce inflammation and redness.

Oral medications like antibiotics or oral vitamin A medications may be prescribed for more severe cases. These treatments work to control flare-ups, minimize inflammation, and improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Laser Therapy

Laser treatments, primarily vascular lasers, target the visible blood vessels and redness associated with rosacea. These treatments help to reduce flushing and improve skin texture.

Laser therapy is particularly effective in combination with medical management and our Dermatologists discuss this combination approach in detail at your initial consultation. This dual approach addresses both the underlying inflammation and the visible symptoms, leading to more significant and lasting improvements.

Why do we recommend medical & Laser management for rosacea?

These treatments work 'hand in hand'

Medical treatments help to calm the inflammatory component of rosacea. These medications target the underlying inflammation and reduce papules, and pustules. For persistent background redness and visible vessels, vascular lasers are highly effective in reducing facial flushing and capillaries.

Improved skin tone & Appearance

Laser therapies, including both vascular laser and carbon dioxide laser, can help improve the redness and rough texture and thickened skin associated with phymatous rosacea. They stimulate collagen remodelling and refine the skin’s surface. In combination with medical therapy, this leads to a smoother, more even complexion over time

Long-Term Control and Relapse Prevention

Rosacea is a chronic condition that often flares without consistent management. A combined approach allows for better control over time. Medical therapy reduces acute symptoms and inflammation, while periodic laser treatments can maintain clear skin, reduce recurrences, and address lingering vascular changes that medication alone cannot treat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately, there is no cure for rosacea, but the symptoms can be effectively managed with the right treatment plan. Early intervention and consistent management can help control flare-ups and minimize the impact on your daily life.

Common triggers include sun exposure, stress, hot or spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temperatures, and certain skincare products. Identifying and avoiding your specific triggers can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups.

The timeline for improvement varies depending on the severity of the condition and the treatments used. Most patients begin to see improvement within a few weeks of starting treatment, with more significant results appearing after several months of consistent management. Laser treatments may show results after a few sessions, though multiple sessions are often required for optimal outcomes.
